Celtic secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over Dundee United in today’s Scottish Premiership match.
The Hoops took the lead when Callum McGregor scored, before Jota doubled their advantage, and a stunning strike from Adam Idah ultimately put the game beyond doubt.
This solid win extends Celtic’s lead at the top of the table to 16 points, with Rangers yet to play their match against Hearts at Tynecastle tomorrow.
Defensively, Celtic put in a robust performance, building momentum ahead of their upcoming Champions League clash with Bayern Munich next week—a welcome boost after last Wednesday’s narrow 2-1 defeat.
During his commentary on BBC Sportsound, pundit Pat Nevin noted that if Auston Trusty had managed to add a late fourth goal, it would have been harsh on the visitors, who had already put in a strong effort. Nevin also remarked that Dundee United’s best chances came as a result of what he described as “laziness” from Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
Nevin explained, “It would have been tough on Dundee United, given the work rate they showed, especially considering they improved in the second half despite not creating many opportunities. Arguably, one of Dundee United’s best chances came from Schmeichel looking a bit lazy with his passing. He took a few risks and narrowly got away with it. I’d hope he avoids that against Bayern Munich.”
Despite the criticism, Schmeichel has been excellent for Celtic this season. The Danish keeper made several crucial saves against Bayern Munich last week to keep the scoreline respectable, and another clean sheet at Parkhead today further boosted his record.
While calling his performance “lazy” might be an exaggeration—since he only faced two shots on target and kept them out—a clean sheet in the Allianz Arena next week would certainly be a welcome addition.
