Leeds United head into Monday night’s showdown with Sunderland having surrendered the top spot to Sheffield United, adding to the concerns of their supporters as the promotion race intensifies.

This situation was somewhat expected. Leeds’ last outing was a dominant 4-0 away victory over Watford, but in the time since, Sheffield United have played twice, overturning a five-point deficit to reclaim first place.

Leeds fans were hoping for slip-ups from The Blades in their matches against Middlesbrough and Luton. However, to Chris Wilder’s delight, Sheffield United secured back-to-back wins, heading into Monday at the summit of the table.

As a result, Leeds must secure a win to restore their two-point advantage. Even a draw would be enough to reclaim the lead, thanks to their impressive goal difference of +47 after 32 games.

Overcoming Sunderland will be no easy task for Farke

Sunderland, managed by Regis Le Bris, are a formidable side, blending promising young talents with experienced players full of character. The likes of Jobe Bellingham and Chris Rigg have been standout performers.

Additionally, players such as Anthony Patterson, Wilson Isidor, Enzo Le Fée, and Chris Mepham add quality across the pitch. Captain Luke O’Nien leads by example, making Sunderland a tough team to break down. But for Daniel Farke, the challenge is even greater.

Farke’s struggles against Sunderland raise concerns

Sunderland have proven to be a bogey team for Farke, both in his time at Leeds and during his four-year tenure at Norwich. Remarkably, he has yet to register a victory against them.

During the 2017-18 season, Farke’s Norwich side faced Sunderland twice, collecting just one point from a possible six while finishing a disappointing 14th in the Championship.

Since taking charge of Leeds, Farke has encountered Sunderland three times. Last season, Bellingham netted the winner in a 1-0 defeat at the Stadium of Light, followed by a goalless draw at Elland Road in April 2024. Earlier this season, an Illan Meslier error cost Leeds a 2-1 win, denying Farke his long-awaited triumph over Sunderland.

With Leeds needing a victory to reclaim control in the title race, Monday presents Farke with perhaps his best chance yet to end his winless streak against the Black Cats. Will he finally break the curse?
