Rangers may be on the verge of a major boardroom shift as the 49ers plot a takeover at Ibrox.

The Light Blues have consistently trailed Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, with the financial disparity between the two clubs becoming increasingly apparent. However, positive changes could be on the horizon for Rangers, as Paraag Marathe is reportedly in advanced discussions to secure a controlling stake in G51.

While this takeover could bring significant transformations at the club, one key figure in the Ibrox hierarchy appears set to remain in place.

John Halstead to Stay Despite 49ers Takeover

Investor John Halstead, who joined the Rangers board in August 2023 after investing through his family’s company, Perron Investments, LLC, in 2021, is expected to retain his position despite the impending 49ers deal.

The Wyoming-based businessman, whose net worth is estimated at £1.5 billion, will likely stay at Ibrox regardless of the takeover, according to The Sun. The newspaper also reported on February 23 that another current investor is expected to keep their shareholding in Govan.

However, this is unlikely to be John Bennett, who seems poised to follow in Dave King’s footsteps and sell his stake as part of the deal. King is currently in talks to offload his 12.96% share, with US healthcare tycoon Andrew Cavenagh playing a key role in the American consortium’s bid.

Negotiations may soon begin with Bennett, who holds a 7% stake in the club, regarding his potential exit.

Major Changes Expected in Rangers’ Boardroom

According to The Athletic, 49ers Enterprises are just a “few months” away from securing a 51% controlling stake in Rangers, signaling a major shakeup in Govan. Talks have likely been ongoing for some time, meaning changes could happen sooner than expected.

Given the impact the 49ers have had since taking control of Leeds United, Rangers fans will be eager to see how the takeover unfolds. Much now depends on Bennett’s decision regarding his stake in the club.
