Barry Ferguson Poised for Stunning Return to Rangers as Clement’s Replacement

Barry Ferguson is on the verge of making a dramatic return to Ibrox, with Rangers lining him up as Philippe Clement’s successor.

The Glasgow club confirmed Clement’s dismissal on Sunday, February 23, following a board meeting triggered by the 2-0 loss to St. Mirren in the Scottish Premiership the previous day. Rangers released a brief 51-word statement announcing the decision but provided no details on their managerial plans. Reports from various journalists and outlets, however, have suggested the club may appoint a caretaker manager.

While Neil McCann and Kevin Thomson have been linked with the interim role, Ferguson has emerged as the frontrunner.

Ferguson the Leading Candidate

According to the Daily Record, Ferguson is the favorite to take over at Ibrox. The publication reported via their live blog (Sunday, February 23, 9:29 pm) that the Rangers legend is set for a sensational return to Govan. He is expected to “answer the call” and take charge until the end of the season.

Ferguson’s last managerial role was with Alloa Athletic during the 2021-22 campaign. Before that, he led Kelty Hearts to their first-ever SPFL promotion. The 47-year-old also had coaching spells with Clyde and served as caretaker at Blackpool in 2014.

Rangers to Delay Permanent Appointment

Meanwhile, discussions over a takeover by 49ers Enterprises, the investment arm of the San Francisco 49ers, are at an advanced stage. Club director Patrick Stewart had previously voiced support for Clement, indicating that the Belgian could remain in charge until the takeover was completed or the season ended.

However, Rangers’ hierarchy was left with little choice but to part ways with the 50-year-old following the St. Mirren defeat. As a result, the club appears set to delay the appointment of a permanent manager, with Ferguson likely to step in on an interim basis.
