Carlton Palmer Backs David Wagner for Blackburn Rovers Job
Former England international Carlton Palmer has identified ex-Norwich City boss David Wagner as his preferred candidate to take over at Blackburn Rovers.
According to Alan Nixon, the race to replace John Eustace at Ewood Park has narrowed down to two final contenders: Wagner and Valerien Ismael. While both managers have undergone the latest round of interviews, reports suggest that Ismael is currently the frontrunner for the role.
Ismael boasts prior Championship experience with Barnsley and West Brom, while Wagner famously secured promotion with Huddersfield Town in 2017 and led Norwich City to a top-six finish last season.
Palmer Favors Wagner Over Ismael
Palmer believes Wagner’s previous success in guiding a team to Premier League promotion gives him the edge over Ismael. Speaking to Football League World, he explained why he sees the German as the better fit for Blackburn’s managerial vacancy.
“Reports indicate that Blackburn Rovers are close to making an appointment, with David Wagner and Valerien Ismael emerging as the two final candidates,” Palmer said.
“Despite recent victories over West Brom and Plymouth Argyle, the club seemed in no rush to finalize a decision. However, a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Swansea has seemingly accelerated the process.”
Palmer acknowledged that Ismael’s ability to work within budget constraints at Barnsley could appeal to Blackburn’s owners, but pointed out his struggles at West Brom. In contrast, Wagner’s Championship promotion experience makes him a standout choice.
“If I had to pick between the two, I’d go with Wagner because of his track record of securing promotion from this league, and that could be a key factor as we approach the final stretch of the season,” he added.
Palmer Warns Blackburn of Promotion Failure
Palmer also cautioned that failing to secure a play-off spot could have major repercussions for Blackburn, highlighting their decision not to fully support John Eustace.
“The race for the play-offs is getting tighter, with teams like Coventry putting together strong runs. Blackburn need someone who can come in, make an immediate impact, and push them into the top six,” he noted.
“If they miss out, it would be a disastrous season, and they would pay the price for not backing Eustace when they had the chance. In my view, Wagner is the better fit, but the bookmakers and insiders seem to be favoring Ismael.”
Rangers Also Eyeing Wagner
Adding another layer of intrigue, journalist Alex Crook has reported that Rangers are considering Wagner as a potential replacement for Philippe Clement, who was recently dismissed.
While Ismael impressed at Barnsley by exceeding expectations and reaching the play-offs, his time at West Brom and Watford was less convincing. Meanwhile, Wagner not only secured Huddersfield’s promotion but also kept them in the Premier League for a second season—an achievement that sets him apart.
Despite Wagner’s mixed spell at Norwich, where he still managed a top-six finish, his Championship experience is well-established. However, the stark contrast in playing styles between Wagner and Ismael suggests Blackburn may lack a clear long-term vision in their managerial search.
