Barry Ferguson Faces Uphill Battle for Permanent Rangers Job

Barry Ferguson is encountering significant challenges in his bid to secure the permanent managerial role at Rangers.

Appointed as head coach until the end of the season following Philippe Clement’s dismissal after a 2-0 loss to St Mirren at Ibrox on 22 February, the former Gers captain has experienced a mixed return to Govan, recording both a win and a defeat in his first two matches.

While the search for a permanent manager remains on hold pending the completion of the proposed 49ers Enterprises takeover, there have been discussions about Ferguson potentially securing the job long-term.

Journalist Predicts Disappointment for Ferguson

Football journalist Michael Gannon has weighed in on Ferguson’s chances, stating that while he wouldn’t be surprised if the Scotsman is considered for the role, securing the job will be difficult—not due to his own performance or the new owners’ stance, but because of the squad’s unreliability.

Gannon criticized the current Rangers squad, labeling them as “ramshackle” and questioning their ability to deliver consistent performances. Speaking on Daily Record’s Hotline Live (3 March), he remarked:

“I just keep thinking these players might let him down in the next 10 games or so. There is no evidence to suggest they will do anything but let him down, so I don’t think they are going to help fulfil his cause in that respect.

“Whoever is overseeing the club’s ownership transition will need to look beyond what he does with this group of players, who aren’t reliable in any way, shape, or form. That makes it tough for him to land the job permanently.”

Other Candidates in Contention

Since Clement’s sacking, several managers have been linked to the Rangers post, including Russell Martin, who has been without a club since leaving Southampton in December, and David Wagner, who has been out of work since his departure from Norwich in May last year.

However, no decision regarding the managerial position will be made until the takeover is finalized, meaning more names could emerge as potential candidates. In the meantime, Ferguson has an opportunity to prove himself to the Rangers hierarchy.
