Norwich City Encouraged to Extend Emi Marcondes’ Contract

Norwich City have been advised to secure Emi Marcondes’ future by activating the one-year extension clause in his contract, which is set to expire at the end of the 2024/25 Championship season.

While attacking duo Josh Sargent and Borja Sainz have been the standout performers at Carrow Road—contributing to 62.5% of the Canaries’ 56 goals this season—Marcondes has quietly become an integral part of the squad since joining as a free agent in October. His initial deal runs until the summer, but Norwich have the option to extend it for another year.

The 29-year-old, who has previously secured promotion from the Championship with Brentford and Bournemouth, has impressed under manager Johannes Hoff Thorup. Recently, he has stepped up with three assists and a goal in his last four matches, playing a key role in Norwich’s push for a play-off spot.

Across 24 appearances this season, Marcondes has contributed four goals and six assists, making the decision to retain him seem like a straightforward one.

Calls for Norwich to Retain Marcondes

Speaking to FLW, Norwich City fan pundit Zeke Downes emphasized the importance of keeping Marcondes at the club, either by triggering the extension or offering him a longer contract.

“I definitely think we need to activate the one-year option for Emi Marcondes,” Downes stated. “I wouldn’t be against a longer deal, but a one-year extension protects us if he gets injured.”

Downes praised the midfielder’s creativity and impact, suggesting that even if Marcondes isn’t a regular starter, he remains a valuable squad player capable of making a difference from the bench.

Marcondes’ Experience a Key Asset

In a relatively young and developing Norwich squad, Marcondes’ Championship experience stands out. Few players in the current setup have previously won promotion, with the club adopting a more youth-focused, continental recruitment strategy in recent transfer windows.

Marcondes’ past success at this level makes him a valuable asset, and his presence could be crucial if Norwich aim for another promotion push next season, whether or not they secure a play-off spot this time around.
