Edinburgh Derby Hits Ear-Splitting Heights as Hearts and Hibs Fans Bring the Noise
The Edinburgh derby sent decibel levels soaring as Hearts and Hibs fans created an electric atmosphere during Sunday’s showdown.
Hibs emerged victorious with a thrilling 2-1 win over their city rivals, marking back-to-back derby triumphs for the first time in 16 years. Martin Boyle ignited the Easter Road crowd with an early opener, only for Jorge Grant to spark the away support with a swift equaliser. However, it was Jack Iredale who had the final say, unleashing a stunning long-range strike to secure third place for Hibs.
Hearts and Hibs Push Noise Levels to the Limit
A new SPFL feature, Noisy Neighbours, is tracking the loudest fanbases across the league, and the latest Edinburgh derby didn’t disappoint. The decibel meter hit an ear-ringing 102 as both sets of fans roared in celebration—matching the sound of a Boeing 737 landing. Boyle’s goal sent the Hibs faithful into a frenzy, but Hearts supporters matched the volume when Grant levelled the score. Iredale’s winner, followed by an emotional Sunshine on Leith rendition, registered 98 decibels—comparable to an orchestral pit at full blast.
Elsewhere, Dundee United fans topped their city rivals in their 2-1 New Year’s derby win, while Dunfermline Athletic supporters outshouted Raith Rovers in February’s 3-1 triumph.
Iredale Reflects on an Emotional Victory
The defender, who set the stage for Hibs’ post-match anthem, admitted the moment left a lasting impact. Just a week after another stirring Sunshine on Leith following victory over Celtic, Iredale was in awe of the experience.
“It’s the best song in world football,” he said. “Even before I was at Hibs, I knew how special it was from watching the Scottish Cup final celebrations. To experience it firsthand, twice in one week, is something you never get used to.”
Iredale acknowledged the personal significance of the moment, given the challenges he’s faced in his career. “It’s a reward for the hard work. Seeing what it means to the fans, my family, and my friends in the crowd—it’s something I’ll cherish.”
