Leeds United secured the First Division title in the 1991-92 season, with confirmation coming after a crucial victory by Manchester United.

Eric Cantona, known for his eccentric personality, marked the occasion with an unusual celebration at 3am.

On April 26, 1992, Leeds edged past Sheffield United with a 3-2 win, thanks to goals from Rod Wallace, Jon Newsome, and an own goal. However, their title hopes depended on Liverpool defeating Manchester United later that evening. Goals from Ian Rush—who would later play for Leeds—and Mark Walters secured a 2-0 win for Liverpool, handing Leeds the championship.

The Leeds squad celebrated in style, first at The Flying Pizza in Leeds before heading to the home of club sponsor Martin Goldman. Goldman later recalled in a 2022 interview with The Mail that Cantona, who had joined Leeds earlier that year, ended the night in dramatic fashion—jumping fully clothed into Goldman’s swimming pool at 3am while heavily intoxicated. The celebrations also included late-night football in the garden, with around 250 guests in attendance.

Ironically, Cantona would later join Manchester United, the team Leeds had beaten to the title. Initially arriving at Elland Road on loan, his move became permanent for a total of £1 million, and he scored three goals in 15 appearances that season.

Leeds’ triumph in 1991-92 was their third top-flight title, following successes under Don Revie in 1968-69 and 1973-74. However, the club struggled after the transition to the Premier League, with financial difficulties in the early 2000s derailing their progress. Their best finish in recent years was ninth place under Marcelo Bielsa.

Now, under Daniel Farke, Leeds sit at the top of the Championship and are on course to secure promotion back to the Premier League, though their immediate silverware ambitions are limited to the second-tier title.
