Hibs CEO Search: Candidate Must Lead Business Operations
Black Knight president Tim Bezbatchenko has expressed his admiration for many of the 50 candidates vying to become Hibernian’s next chief executive. While the club would ideally appoint someone with local ties, Bezbatchenko emphasized that expertise and commitment to the role will be the primary factors in the decision.
Hibs have been on the lookout for a new CEO since Ben Kensell’s abrupt exit in January. Bezbatchenko, who joined the Easter Road board alongside billionaire Bournemouth owner Bill Foley following Black Knight’s £6 million minority investment, is working closely with owner Ian Gordon to find the right successor.
“We’d love to bring in someone who understands the club inside and out,” Bezbatchenko stated. “But more importantly, we need a leader with the experience to drive Hibs forward. What truly matters is their dedication to the club, and in return, we want to ensure the club supports them if they prove to be the right fit.”
While still relatively new to Hibs, Bezbatchenko noted that the candidate pool is exceptionally strong, not just from Scotland and the UK, but internationally. “In order to achieve the goals set by Ian and David Gray, we need the best candidate available, regardless of background,” he added.
CEO Must Have Football Industry Experience
Confirming that 50 serious applicants have already undergone part of the selection process, Bezbatchenko reiterated the importance of finding someone with a sporting or football background.
Ian Gordon highlighted Bezbatchenko’s valuable role in the search, stating: “Tim’s experience in MLS with Toronto and Columbus has been invaluable. His insights have helped not just me, but also Malky Mackay and the wider football department in identifying the right candidate.”
Gordon further stressed the need for a CEO who can take charge of Hibs’ business operations while also possessing experience within a football club. “We’ve explored options extensively, but it’s crucial that the individual has a deep understanding of the football world. They need to lead the business side of the club and help drive progress.”
Kensell’s Tenure and Departure
During his time at Easter Road, Kensell was a somewhat divisive figure among supporters, particularly during difficult periods. Having joined the club in 2021, he played a key role in stadium upgrades and was instrumental in negotiating Foley’s investment, bringing Hibs under the influence of a major sports investor with ties to global football and ice hockey franchises.
However, Kensell’s tenure also saw the club post financial losses exceeding £7 million, as revealed in the latest shareholder accounts. Now, as Hibs look to move forward, securing a CEO who can effectively manage both football and business operations will be crucial for the club’s future success.
