Who Will Be the Steelers’ Starting Quarterback in 2025?
After finishing the 2024 season with a 10-7 record, the Pittsburgh Steelers are turning their attention to offseason roster improvements. One of the biggest questions revolves around the quarterback position, as both Justin Fields and Russell Wilson are set to become free agents.
With free agency negotiations opening on March 10, the Steelers may look to retain one of the two signal-callers. However, it’s uncertain which one they will prioritize. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network’s The Insiders, current indications suggest Pittsburgh is leaning toward keeping Fields over Wilson.
“It does seem like the Steelers will sign one of these quarterbacks,” Rapoport reported. “[General manager] Omar Khan has suggested that the plan was to have their next starting quarterback come from within. Based on my sources, it appears more likely that Justin Fields will be that guy rather than Russell Wilson.”
Rapoport suggests that Pittsburgh wants to evaluate Fields further after his inconsistent tenure with the Chicago Bears. Entering his fourth year in the league, Fields could be given the opportunity to establish himself as the Steelers’ full-time starter in 2025. However, the situation remains fluid and could change based on free agency developments and the NFL Draft.
Fields appeared in 10 games last season, starting six, and finished with 1,106 passing yards, 289 rushing yards, 10 total touchdowns, and just one interception. He also posted a career-high 65.8% completion rate.
Wilson, on the other hand, played and started in 11 games. The 36-year-old veteran threw for 2,482 yards, 18 total touchdowns, and five interceptions, with a 63.7% completion rate. Despite his solid performance, Wilson has reportedly drawn interest from multiple quarterback-needy teams this offseason, leaving his future with the Steelers uncertain.
As the free agency period approaches, Pittsburgh’s decision at quarterback will be one of the most closely watched storylines of the offseason.
