Barry Ferguson Holds Rangers Hot Seat as Kevin Muscat Hints at Shanghai Port Commitment

Barry Ferguson remains in charge at Ibrox until the end of the season, but major changes are looming as Rangers search for a permanent successor to Philippe Clement.

One of the leading contenders, Kevin Muscat, has seemingly signaled his commitment to Shanghai Port, with the club on the brink of elimination from the Asian Champions League. The Australian coach was previously linked with the Rangers job after Michael Beale’s departure, but Ibrox chiefs ultimately opted for Clement.

As Rangers endure a frustrating campaign, focus has already shifted toward who will take over full-time. Record Sport reports that the consortium bidding for a controlling stake in the club—led by American businessman Andrew Cavenagh and Leeds United chairman Paraag Marathe, a key figure behind the San Francisco 49ers’ investment arm—has started evaluating managerial candidates.

The takeover has been agreed in principle, and discussions with potential new managers are expected in the coming weeks. Muscat, who secured a league and cup double in China, was previously considered for the Rangers job, but his recent comments suggest he is focused on his current role.

Following Shanghai Port’s 1-0 defeat to Yokohama F. Marinos, which left their Champions League hopes hanging in the balance, Muscat told Titan Sports:
“We created chances today, and we are making progress—we hadn’t been able to do that before. Given the quality of the opposition, they are very strong. But we did manage to create opportunities. Now, we need to keep focusing on that, as it will be the key to scoring goals moving forward.”

Meanwhile, Rafa Benitez is another name under consideration, though luring him to Ibrox may prove difficult. The Champions League-winning coach recently stated he is holding out for a Premier League opportunity. Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, the Spaniard revealed:
“I have had a lot of offers this year, but I was always waiting for the Premier League because it’s the league I prefer. You have to pick the right opportunity, and hopefully, it will come soon.”

With Rangers’ managerial search gathering momentum, the next few weeks could prove pivotal in shaping the club’s long-term direction.
