Rangers Set for Key Injury Boost Ahead of Fenerbahce Clash

Rangers could be poised to welcome back a crucial player for Thursday’s Europa League last-16 showdown against Fenerbahce, following developments at Auchenhowie.

Barry Ferguson’s squad faces a tough first-leg challenge in Istanbul against Jose Mourinho’s side, especially after a dramatic downturn in domestic form. Since their 30 January victory over Union SG, which secured their place in the competition’s knockout phase, Rangers have struggled—losing three of their last six matches, including a shock Scottish Cup defeat to Queen’s Park.

That loss, along with a 2-0 defeat to St Mirren at Ibrox, led to Philippe Clement’s departure, setting the stage for Ferguson’s interim stint and a high-profile managerial clash with Mourinho.

John Souttar Nearing Return for Rangers

Rangers’ recent home struggles have been exacerbated by defensive injury woes, with John Souttar sidelined since mid-February due to a groin issue. However, fresh reports suggest a timely boost for the squad ahead of their European tie.

Speaking live from Auchenhowie on Tuesday morning (5 March, 09:34 AM), Sky Sports News journalist Luke Shanley confirmed that both Souttar and Leon Balogun have returned to full training ahead of the trip to Turkey.

Shanley, commenting over footage shared on social media, stated: “They’ve received a boost, as John Souttar is back in training. He’s been a big miss due to injury, and if Rangers can get him fit, he’ll be a huge asset at the back.”

Souttar’s Return Could Strengthen Rangers’ Defence

Few Rangers fans would dispute the impact Souttar has when fit, as he adds much-needed stability to the backline and strengthens the team’s ability to defend set-pieces.

Though he was part of the defense during the shock Queen’s Park defeat, his absence in the losses to St Mirren and Motherwell was notably felt. Clinton Nsiala and Robin Propper have come under scrutiny for their performances, including during the 4-2 win over Kilmarnock. The defeat to St Mirren ultimately proved costly for Clement, leading to his dismissal.

If both Souttar and Balogun are available in Istanbul, it would provide a significant boost for Ferguson. However, it remains uncertain whether the interim boss will be able to deploy them together for the first time under his tenure.
