Ian Poveda’s Struggles Continue at Sunderland After Leeds United Exit

Things are going well for Leeds United at the moment, but for Ian Poveda—who departed the club last year—the challenges keep piling up.

Poveda once had the potential to become a footballing star. With a background that included spells at Manchester City and Barcelona, his move to Leeds United in 2020 seemed like the perfect opportunity to flourish. However, over four years, he managed just 30 first-team appearances before being released at the end of last season.

The 25-year-old had mixed loan experiences away from Elland Road but impressed during the latter half of last season at Sheffield Wednesday. That form earned him a free transfer to Sunderland, where he signed a three-year contract with an option for a fourth.

It appeared to be a fresh start for the Colombian winger, but injuries have turned his first season at the Stadium of Light into a nightmare.

Another Injury Setback for Poveda

Poveda featured against Leeds United in February, playing in Sunderland’s 2-1 defeat at Elland Road. That match marked his sixth Championship appearance of the season, but he is still waiting for his first league start.

Recurring injuries have kept him sidelined for extended periods, and Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris has now confirmed yet another setback.

Speaking to Sunderland Echo ahead of their clash with Cardiff City, Le Bris revealed:

“I don’t know exactly what the timeframe will be for his return, but it might be three to four weeks. It’s frustrating because we know he is talented—he has the ability to dribble and create something from nothing in tight spaces.”

Poveda’s Wish for Consistency Remains Unfulfilled

No one questions Poveda’s talent. Even at Leeds, it was clear that he possessed real ability, but injuries prevented him from reaching his full potential.

When he arrived at Sunderland, Poveda expressed his desire for consistent playing time, stating:

“All I want to do is get on the pitch and play for Sunderland.”

Unfortunately, his time on Wearside has been plagued by injuries. This latest setback is expected to keep him out beyond the March international break, and Le Bris is unlikely to rush him back, given his history of fitness issues.

It’s a frustrating situation for both the player and the club, as Poveda’s talent remains evident—but his body continues to let him down.
