Sunderland are eager to reclaim their former success by securing promotion to the Premier League, a move that could provide Regis Le Bris with the opportunity to make strategic signings during the transfer window.
Sunderland’s Erratic Form Threatens Automatic Promotion
Despite an impressive start to the season, Sunderland have struggled with inconsistency, making them one of the Championship’s more unpredictable teams. Currently, they trail Sheffield United by eight points in the race for automatic promotion.
While closing that gap in the remaining 11 matches is not out of the question, Le Bris is likely preparing for the highs and lows of the playoffs if his side fails to overtake the Blades. Sunderland experienced heartbreak in the 2022/23 playoffs, losing to Luton Town in the semi-finals. While past disappointments may resurface, they could also serve as fuel for redemption.
Promotion would also play a key role in Sunderland’s transfer plans. With Jobe Bellingham and Chris Rigg attracting strong interest, retaining them beyond the summer could prove difficult. However, transfer speculation at the Stadium of Light isn’t solely focused on departures.
Reports indicate that Hansa Rostock’s Ahmet Gurleyen is a target for Sunderland, with the defender potentially available for just £414,000. Regardless of which division they compete in next season, the club remains open to making cost-effective signings in the North East.
In line with that strategy, Sunderland are tracking a promising midfielder who has been regarded as one of the brightest talents to emerge from his country in recent years.
Sunderland Target Motherwell Sensation Lennon Miller
According to Graeme Bailey via EFL Analysis, Sunderland are among several clubs pursuing Motherwell’s Lennon Miller this summer as the midfielder continues to shine at Fir Park.
Miller has also drawn interest from Sheffield United, Middlesbrough, Leeds United, and Premier League sides such as Liverpool and Newcastle United.
Described as “an exceptional talent” by Motherwell chief executive Brian Caldwell, the 18-year-old has delivered four goals and six assists in 30 appearances across all competitions this season. Despite his young age, he has already captained his club and is regarded as one of Scottish football’s most exciting prospects. With his contract entering its final year, Motherwell reportedly value him just under £10 million.
A versatile presence in midfield, Miller has won 128 duels and boasts a 71.8% tackle success rate in the Scottish Premiership. Offensively, he has created 42 chances, further justifying the growing interest in him.
Should Sunderland secure promotion, they could be in a strong position to sign him. However, whether Miller chooses the Stadium of Light remains uncertain.
