Rangers Secure Stunning European Win as Vaclav Cerny Shines Against Fenerbahçe
Glasgow Rangers produced one of their best away performances in Europe as they claimed a 3-1 first-leg advantage over Fenerbahçe ahead of the return fixture at Ibrox.
The scoreline could have been even more emphatic, with Cyriel Dessers seeing two goals disallowed for offside, but it was still a superb display from the Scottish side in Turkey.
This victory came at a crucial time, as Rangers entered the match off the back of three consecutive home defeats—their worst run at Ibrox since 2012. Losses to Queen’s Park, St Mirren, and Motherwell had seen them score just once across those games. Expectations were low heading into the clash against José Mourinho’s team, but Barry Ferguson masterminded an impressive tactical triumph over the experienced Portuguese coach.
In midfield, Mohamed Diomande and Nicolas Raskin dictated play, while Leon Balogun and John Souttar formed a solid defensive partnership. Even Jack Butland, who had faced criticism in recent weeks, delivered key saves to keep Fenerbahçe at bay.
However, the standout performer on the night was Vaclav Cerny, who once again demonstrated his class on the European stage.
Cerny’s Outstanding Display vs Fenerbahçe
Before this fixture, Cerny had already amassed 15 goals and seven assists in all competitions for Rangers, proving himself to be an inspired loan signing. He has often saved his best performances for European nights, and Thursday was no different.
His two goals were executed with real quality—his first, a left-footed strike following a brilliant Dessers pass, and his second, a cool finish after racing onto Raskin’s through ball to seal Rangers’ third goal. Cerny also attempted two dribbles and delivered a cross, constantly threatening the Turkish side’s defense.
While there have been matches where he has struggled to make an impact, Cerny has consistently delivered on the biggest occasions. His performances highlight just how valuable he has been to Rangers, making it all the more unfortunate that he is only at the club on loan.
Rangers have seen similar situations before. Malik Tillman, who starred in the 2022/23 campaign, has since flourished at PSV Eindhoven, where he has contributed 15 goals this season. Likewise, Abdallah Sima, another successful loan signing, has impressed at Brest after leaving Ibrox.
Was Sima an Even Bigger Talent Than Cerny?
Ahead of the 2023/24 season, Rangers secured Abdallah Sima on loan from Brighton, and he quickly established himself as a key player. Despite missing 18 matches due to injury, the Senegalese winger still scored 16 goals and provided two assists, making a major impact in Scotland.
Had he stayed fit throughout the season, who knows what Rangers could have achieved? His impressive performances led to speculation about a potential permanent transfer, with manager Philippe Clement later revealing:
“I’ve been in touch with him, of course. He’s like one of my sons. Abda loves the club, the playing style, and his teammates.”
Brighton reportedly valued Sima at £8 million, a fee that proved to be a stumbling block for Rangers. Instead, the winger joined Brest on loan, where he has continued to impress.
Sima’s Progress Since Leaving Rangers
In 32 appearances for Brest, Sima has recorded eight goals and two assists in all competitions. His standout performances in the Champions League saw him net three goals in nine matches, including a brace against RB Salzburg.
With an average of 1.8 shots per game and a knack for creating chances, he has proven that he can handle the demands of elite-level football. Now, the big question is whether Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler will integrate him into the first-team squad next season.
If given the opportunity, Sima could establish himself as a top player. At just 23 years old, he has plenty of time to develop further—something Rangers may regret missing out on.
As for Cerny, his performances suggest a similar scenario could unfold. With clubs likely to circle when the summer transfer window opens, Rangers fans may once again find themselves falling in love with a loan star, only to see him leave.
