Jamie Vardy Eyes Premier League Record as Leicester Face Manchester United

Leicester City will face Manchester United for the fourth time this season on Sunday, and Jamie Vardy has a golden opportunity to break a remarkable Premier League record.

While the Foxes have been setting records for all the wrong reasons, their recent form has been dismal. Their 4-0 home defeat to Brentford saw them become the first team in Premier League history to lose six consecutive matches without scoring and conceding at least twice in each game.

Subsequent losses to West Ham and Chelsea have deepened their struggles, with Leicester failing to find the net in either match. Despite showing improvement against Chelsea, a second-half goal from Marc Cucurella condemned them to their 12th league defeat in 13 games.

Now, ahead of their crucial home clash against Manchester United, Leicester sit six points adrift in the relegation zone, desperately needing a savior.

Vardy Closing in on Ryan Giggs’ Premier League Record

At 38 years old, Jamie Vardy remains Leicester’s go-to striker, but his goals have dried up, with just one in his last 12 league matches. This slump has mirrored the Foxes’ lack of firepower in recent games.

However, this weekend presents the perfect opportunity for Vardy to step up against a struggling Manchester United side currently in 14th place.

Vardy has already scored six goals in 18 matches against United, including the famous strike that broke Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record in 2016. Now, he has another milestone in his sights.

The veteran forward could surpass Ryan Giggs’ record as the oldest player to score and assist in a single Premier League game. Giggs set the mark at 38 years and 22 days old in December 2011, when he achieved the feat against Fulham.

Vardy, who became the second-oldest player to do so in Leicester’s 2-2 draw against Brighton in December, now has the chance to go one step further—and he’d love to make history against Manchester United.

Ryan Giggs’ 2016 Praise for Vardy

Following Leicester’s remarkable Premier League triumph in 2015/16, Ryan Giggs acknowledged Vardy’s rise when he was called up for England.

With Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney competing for a starting spot, Vardy’s inclusion was a testament to his impressive performances. Giggs highlighted England’s attacking depth and praised the Leicester striker’s impact.

“England will find it very difficult to name their number one side. You see the depth in their forwards – Rooney, Kane, Vardy, Welbeck. England have more depth, but Wales have got the better team spirit,” Giggs told Wales Online before Euro 2016.

He also praised the emergence of young talents like Dele Alli and Ross Barkley, acknowledging Vardy’s incredible rise:

“Jamie Vardy has been brilliant. A year ago, you wouldn’t have expected some of these players to be in the squad, so it’s going to be really difficult to choose.”

Vardy justified the praise by scoring in England’s 2-1 victory over Wales at Euro 2016, with Daniel Sturridge securing a last-minute winner.

Now, almost a decade later, Vardy has the chance to etch his name into Premier League history once again.
