Leicester City Stars Set for International Duty as First Break of 2025 Arrives
With the first international break of 2025 underway, several Leicester City players are set to represent their nations in World Cup qualifiers and friendlies.
As Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side struggles in the Premier League’s bottom three, the break may offer a much-needed respite, despite an encouraging display in their recent loss to Chelsea.
James Justin, often criticized by Leicester fans, delivered a strong performance against Chelsea, as did fellow full-back Luke Thomas, who was singled out for praise by Van Nistelrooy. However, neither player is expected to feature in the England squad. One Leicester star who might have anticipated a call-up has also been informed that he won’t be joining his national team.
Denmark Boss Confirms Kristiansen’s Omission from National Team
Denmark has a strong presence in Leicester’s squad, with Mads Hermansen, Jannik Vestergaard, and Victor Kristiansen all representing the Euro 2020 semi-finalists and Euro 2024 quarter-finalists.
While Hermansen is still awaiting his senior debut, serving as backup to former Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel, Vestergaard and Kristiansen are more regular fixtures in the squad. However, Kristiansen has received disappointing news regarding his international future.
Denmark’s head coach, Brian Riemer, confirmed to Tipsbladet that he had spoken to Kristiansen about his omission, explaining:
“It was a tough conversation for me. I think he deserves more. It’s purely a tactical decision based on what I need. I don’t want five full-backs, and the chosen profiles fit my plans better.
He took it professionally and like a man. Of course, he didn’t agree, but he understood the reasoning.”
Kristiansen’s Spot at Leicester Also Under Threat
For much of the season, Kristiansen has faced little competition for his position, but that could be changing.
Luke Thomas’ resurgence, combined with Kristiansen’s struggles against Chelsea, puts his place at risk. Additionally, Woyo Coulibaly, Ricardo Pereira, and James Justin are all capable of covering the left side of defence, giving Van Nistelrooy plenty of options.
While squad depth is a boost for the manager, it presents a challenge for Kristiansen. If he doesn’t improve his performances, he risks losing his spot at both club and international levels.
