Portsmouth Loanee Adil Aouchiche Could Seek Permanent Move Away from Sunderland

Adil Aouchiche, currently on loan at Portsmouth, may look for a permanent transfer away from Sunderland this summer.

The 22-year-old former France youth international joined Pompey in the final days of the January transfer window, signing on for the remainder of the season. His journey has seen him progress from PSG’s academy—where he made three senior appearances—before spells at Saint-Étienne and Lorient eventually led to his move to Sunderland in the summer of 2023.

However, with limited opportunities to cement himself as a regular starter at the Stadium of Light, Aouchiche could seek a fresh start elsewhere to secure more consistent game time.

Portsmouth Fan Pundit Praises Aouchiche’s Impact

Portsmouth fan pundit Miltos Ioannidis weighed in on whether the club should attempt to sign Aouchiche permanently if they secure Championship survival.

“First off, Adil Aouchiche is a very talented footballer, and his ability has never been in question,” Miltos said on Open Goal (11 March). “Some Sunderland fans might doubt whether he’s cut out for this level, but he’s an excellent technician and brings a lot to the team with the ball at his feet.”

Beyond his technical skills, Aouchiche has impressed with his work rate, something that surprised Miltos:

“I think his biggest surprise for me has been his energy. He had to step up after Callum Lang’s departure, and he’s worked tirelessly—even in games where we haven’t performed well. Take the Leeds match, for example. While he didn’t register a goal or an assist, his pressing and overall contribution were crucial.”

Despite his strong performances, Aouchiche has yet to make a major impact on the scoresheet, which remains an area for improvement.

Portsmouth Urged to Consider Permanent Move for Aouchiche

Depending on Sunderland’s plans for next season, Aouchiche may find himself further down the pecking order, opening the door for Portsmouth to pursue a permanent deal.

Miltos believes the club should consider securing the midfielder long-term:

“I don’t think he’s been bad at all. In fact, his energy is sometimes overlooked because other players—like Josh Murphy, Colby Bishop, and Matt Ritchie—have had a more direct attacking impact. But Aouchiche has done a solid job since arriving.

“I’d give him a few more games—he’s due a goal or assist. Then it’ll come down to Sunderland’s stance. If they’re open to offloading him, I’d definitely be interested in keeping him at Portsmouth.”

With his style of play aligning well with Pompey’s system, Aouchiche could be a strong addition if he continues his promising form. Whether Sunderland decide to part ways permanently remains to be seen, but the midfielder may have already done enough to earn a place at Fratton Park beyond this season.
