Sunderland Target Hearts Star Shankland as Potential Stewart Successor
Sunderland had to settle for a point in their last outing against Preston North End, as returning fan-favorite Romaine Mundle delivered a crucial goal to secure a 1-1 draw for Regis Le Bris’ side. The result extended the Black Cats’ unbeaten home record in March, but their resilience will be put to the test in their upcoming Championship clash against Frank Lampard’s Coventry City, who, like Sunderland, are pushing for a playoff spot.
Should Sunderland secure promotion at the end of what has been a long and dramatic campaign, Le Bris is expected to reinforce his squad across all areas in preparation for the Premier League challenge. One key move reportedly being considered is a swoop for a proven goalscorer to bolster their attacking options.
Sunderland Setting Sights on Shankland
According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Sunderland are eyeing a summer move for Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland, whose future at Tynecastle remains uncertain. The 29-year-old has yet to commit to a contract extension with the Edinburgh side, and with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season, Ipswich Town have also entered the race for his signature. Given that Shankland previously held a £5 million valuation, acquiring him on a free transfer would represent an outstanding piece of business.
The Black Cats will hope to win the battle for the prolific forward, particularly given their previous success in signing talent from Scotland. Sunderland famously landed Ross Stewart from Ross County, and while Stewart proved to be a major asset, Le Bris’ squad has struggled to adequately replace him. Shankland, with his track record in Scottish football, could offer the kind of firepower they have been missing.
Why Shankland Outshines Isidor in Front of Goal
Last season, Shankland showcased his clinical finishing ability, netting an impressive 31 goals in 47 appearances, including a composed strike early in 2024. While his goal return this season has been less prolific—just four goals in 34 appearances—his overall scoring record in Scotland highlights his pedigree as a natural finisher.
Comparing his numbers to Wilson Isidor, who has found the net 14 times this season, Shankland’s overall career tally of 205 goals across various Scottish divisions far eclipses Isidor’s 60 career strikes. The Glasgow-born striker has consistently delivered at multiple clubs, reinforcing his reputation as a lethal goal poacher.
Additionally, Shankland’s scoring exploits surpass those of Ross Stewart before his move to the EFL. While Stewart managed 52 goals in Scotland before securing a switch to Sunderland, Shankland’s numbers stand on an entirely different level.
Although concerns may arise over his dip in form this campaign, Shankland has previously been lauded for his “ruthless” finishing—praise that came from none other than former Celtic striker Chris Sutton. If he can rediscover that sharpness, he could prove to be a game-changing acquisition for Sunderland.
With his Hearts contract set to expire, the Black Cats could land Shankland on a free transfer—a risk-free move that would strengthen their attacking options, regardless of whether they achieve promotion.
