Angus Gunn Under Pressure After Struggles in Norwich City’s Goal
Angus Gunn has faced criticism for his performances with Norwich City this season, failing to maintain the high standards he previously set at Carrow Road.
Since joining the club permanently in the summer of 2021, the 29-year-old has been the Canaries’ first-choice goalkeeper for much of the past three seasons. However, injuries have disrupted his current campaign, leading to inconsistent form and periods out of the starting lineup.
With Gunn’s contract set to expire this summer, his recent dip in form raises questions about his future at the club. Norwich will likely want to see a significant improvement over the coming weeks if they are to consider extending his stay in Norfolk.
To gain insight into the situation, Football League World spoke with Norwich fan pundit Zeke Downes, who expressed frustration with Gunn’s performances and called for major improvements from the shot-stopper.
Norwich Fans Expect More From Gunn After Underwhelming Season
Gunn has long been a reliable presence in Norwich’s goal since signing from Southampton nearly four years ago, making over 100 appearances for the club. However, this season has been a different story, with injuries hampering his form and his displays proving inconsistent across 28 Championship matches.
A key concern is Gunn’s shot-stopping ability—he has conceded 5.9 more goals than expected, the worst record among regular starting goalkeepers in the division. This vulnerability at the back has left Downes questioning whether Gunn should remain Norwich’s number one moving forward.
When asked about the players who need to step up, Downes did not hold back in his assessment:
“I would like to see a massive improvement from Angus Gunn because not having a goalkeeper that makes saves is costing us a lot.”
“You can have a defence that makes mistakes, but if your ‘keeper is stopping shots, you reduce the damage. Without that, we’re dropping too many points.”
Gunn’s Norwich Future in Doubt as Contract Nears Expiry
Gunn now finds himself at a pivotal moment in his career, with his Norwich contract expiring in the coming months. The goalkeeper recently confirmed that discussions over a potential extension have yet to take place.
Statistically, Gunn has struggled compared to his previous form. His 66.0% save percentage ranks among the worst in the Championship, and he has kept just four clean sheets in 28 league appearances. A hamstring injury has sidelined him recently, but his replacements, George Long and Vicente Reyes, have also failed to impress.
Despite his poor form, Downes remains hopeful that Gunn can rediscover his best performances before the season ends:
“I don’t know what has happened to Gunn this season. Last year, he was overperforming in terms of expected goals conceded, but this year, he’s massively under. Maybe it’s his contract situation affecting him, I don’t know.”
“If he can get back to his best—though time is running out—then we might end up in a better position by the end of the season.”
With the Canaries pushing for a strong finish, Gunn faces a race against time to prove he deserves a new contract. If his performances don’t improve, Norwich could be forced to look for a new number one ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
