Sunderland are being strongly linked with a move for prolific striker Lawrence Shankland during the summer transfer window.

Former player and pundit David Prutton has backed the Black Cats to sign the Hearts and Scotland forward, who has netted 211 career goals. Reports suggest Sunderland will face competition from Premier League side Ipswich Town for Shankland’s signature. The ex-Dundee United striker has been on Sunderland’s radar for several seasons, and his reputation soared after scoring 59 goals in 94 matches across the 2022-23 and 2023-24 campaigns.

Despite attracting interest from several top European clubs, Shankland has remained at Tynecastle. However, fresh links have emerged regarding a potential move to Wearside.

Speaking to Football League World, Prutton praised Shankland’s qualities and experience, highlighting his physical presence and finishing ability. He noted that while the striker has yet to play in England, his wealth of experience and goal-scoring record would make him a valuable addition to Sunderland’s squad.

Prutton also pointed out that Shankland’s arrival could provide much-needed experience in a relatively young team, complementing existing attacking options like Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda.
