John Tavares Expected to Re-Sign With Maple Leafs Amid Free Agency Speculation
Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares is set to become a free agent on July 1, but multiple reports suggest he is likely to remain with the team.
On the website Puckpedia, which allows users to predict trades and contracts, one fan has projected a two-year, $10 million extension for Tavares. While he will likely take a pay cut from his current deal, a $5 million annual salary seems reasonable for both parties.
Tavares is wrapping up the final season of his seven-year, $77 million contract with the Maple Leafs. He’s enjoying a strong campaign, which could influence his market value, but if he intends to stay in Toronto, he may need to accept a discounted deal.
The Toronto native has played 59 games this season, tallying 27 goals and 29 assists for 56 points. A former first-overall pick in the 2009 NHL Draft, Tavares is also a six-time All-Star.
Tavares Open to Extension Talks With Maple Leafs
After leaving the New York Islanders to sign with his hometown team, Tavares now finds himself nearing the end of his contract. Despite this, he remains hopeful about securing an extension with Toronto.
Tavares has expressed a willingness to discuss a new deal during the season but admits his priority remains on the current campaign.
“I just try to focus on my game, control what I can, and help the team as much as possible,” Tavares said. “Right now, our focus is on winning games, making the playoffs, and pushing for a deep run. When the time comes to discuss a contract, I’ll be ready, but for now, I’m just concentrating on my play.”
Coach Craig Berube Praises Tavares’ Leadership
As a former Maple Leafs captain, Tavares has been a key leader for the team on and off the ice. His consistency and professionalism have stood out, particularly in a contract year.
Head coach Craig Berube has been impressed by Tavares’ approach, noting that contract uncertainty hasn’t impacted his play.
“Not at all,” Berube said. “He’s a true professional. Every day, he sticks to his routine, puts in the work, and performs at a high level. I don’t think the contract situation is on his mind at all.”
Tavares and the Maple Leafs currently hold a 39-24-3 record, sitting third in the Atlantic Division as they push for a strong playoff run.
