Todd Cantwell may have left Rangers, but he continues to stir discussion among the club’s fanbase.

The English midfielder ended his 19-month stint at Ibrox by moving to Blackburn Rovers during the summer transfer window. Despite his departure, he frequently shares his thoughts on Rangers via social media, most recently commenting on their Old Firm victory over Celtic on Sunday (March 16).

However, a recent remark from the 27-year-old has sparked controversy, drawing criticism from former Rangers player Derek Ferguson.

Cantwell Reacts to Philippe Clement’s Sacking

Cantwell did not see eye to eye with former Rangers boss Philippe Clement, who was dismissed nearly a month ago.

Despite now playing for Blackburn, Cantwell quickly responded to Clement’s sacking with a cryptic social media post that appeared to take a swipe at the Belgian. He shared an Instagram story featuring the song “Taliban” and captioned it: “Sun’s out… so is our tune,” tagging Rangers captain James Tavernier. Many interpreted the post as an unnecessary dig at Clement following his departure.

When asked about Cantwell’s comments, Ferguson told Ibrox News:

“That’s poor. It really annoys me when players post things like that on social media. Say it to Clement’s face.

“Clement gave his all but wasn’t good enough. We never like to see people lose their jobs, but he wasn’t delivering.

“Then Cantwell takes a cheap shot. It’s garbage—absolute nonsense. I can’t stand people taking jabs at others like that.

“Clement did his best, and Rangers fans will respect that. Cantwell should focus on performing for his new club instead of running his mouth.

Cantwell Struggling at Blackburn

Since joining Blackburn, Cantwell has failed to make a significant impact. Seven months into his time at Ewood Park, he has managed only five goal involvements in 30 Championship appearances.

He has started 21 of those matches, with the remaining nine coming from the bench. His latest outing saw him play just nine minutes in Blackburn’s home defeat to relegation-threatened Cardiff City.

As Ferguson suggested, Cantwell would be better off concentrating on his performances at Blackburn rather than engaging in controversy over Rangers.
