Simon Jordan Criticizes Police Scotland’s Involvement in Vaclav Cerny Incident
Simon Jordan has strongly condemned Police Scotland’s decision to investigate Vaclav Cerny’s controversial celebration after Rangers’ Old Firm derby victory over Celtic.
The Czech international featured in the starting lineup as Rangers secured a dramatic 3-2 win at Parkhead on Sunday (March 16), with Hamza Igamane netting a late winner. However, Cerny found himself at the center of controversy after being seen spraying water towards Celtic fans during the celebrations—a move that could potentially lead to disciplinary action.
Police Scotland has since launched an investigation into the incident, but their involvement has sparked criticism from some quarters.
Jordan and Murphy Slam Police Investigation Into Cerny
Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy also took issue with the police stepping in, calling it an overreaction. He believes the authorities should not be getting involved in such incidents.
Jordan, speaking on talkSPORT (March 19, 10:26), questioned what charges Cerny could possibly face and warned that such scrutiny could set a precedent for future celebrations.
“That’s ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous,” Murphy remarked.
Jordan added:
“What are they going to charge [Cerny] with? Over-celebrating? So now, every time a player gets carried away and runs towards opposition fans, the police might get involved?
“Yes, he sprayed some water, but he can easily argue that it was part of the celebration, not specifically aimed at Celtic fans. There was no malicious intent. I’m not sure what the police are hoping to charge him with.”
Potential Ban Could Open the Door for Nedim Bajrami
If the Scottish FA decides to impose a suspension on Cerny for his actions at Parkhead, it could create a selection dilemma for Rangers’ interim boss Barry Ferguson.
Nedim Bajrami, who has struggled for game time since his move from Sassuolo last summer, might find himself with an opportunity to stake his claim in the squad. The 26-year-old has remained on the fringes, even after Ferguson’s tactical adjustments, which have already yielded impressive victories over Jose Mourinho’s Roma and Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic.
Cerny has been a key attacking figure under Ferguson, and his absence could force the manager to turn to alternative options. Ianis Hagi is another player who has seen limited minutes recently and could also be in contention for a starting role.
With the situation still developing, Rangers fans will be eager to see whether the Czech winger faces a significant ban, potentially shaking up Ferguson’s attacking setup in the crucial weeks ahead.
