John Souttar’s Future at Rangers: Potential New Role and Captaincy

John Souttar has been a key figure for Rangers this season, despite dealing with injury setbacks, and could be in line for a new role if he extends his stay at Ibrox.

The centre-back has been among the club’s top performers, but with his current contract set to enter its final year next summer, Rangers may need to consider selling him to avoid losing him on a free transfer. However, if the Scotland international agrees to fresh terms, he may take on greater responsibilities within the squad.

Could Souttar Be Rangers’ Next Captain?

Souttar could be the next captain of the Glasgow giants if he signs a contract extension, according to journalist Mark Guidi.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show (20 March), Guidi stated: “For me, if [Souttar] stays and signs a new contract, he’s the next captain. Souttar or Raskin are the leading candidates for the role.”

Ferguson Counting on Souttar at Ibrox

Barry Ferguson has made a strong case to remain in charge at Rangers after securing impressive victories over Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce and Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic.

Although he is currently serving as interim manager, those results have fueled calls for him to continue beyond this season. While progressing past Athletic Club in the Europa League will be a tough challenge, fans are growing more optimistic about the club’s direction.

For Ferguson to have a real shot at overcoming the La Liga side, he will need his best players fully fit. Souttar, currently on international duty with Scotland, put in a strong performance as his nation defeated Greece in the Nations League on Thursday (20 March).

The 28-year-old has faced recurring fitness issues this season, and Ferguson will be hoping he returns to Glasgow in top condition.

James Tavernier has been a dependable captain for Rangers, but with the 33-year-old’s tenure at Ibrox seemingly nearing its end, the club must start considering his successor. Both Souttar and Nicolas Raskin appear to be ideal candidates to take on the armband—though Rangers must first determine who will be their next permanent manager.
