Leeds United Loanee Rasmus Kristensen Outshines Rafael Leao as Denmark Defeat Portugal

Known more for his attacking prowess, Rasmus Kristensen was tasked with a different challenge against Portugal — a disciplined, defensive performance to contain AC Milan’s explosive and technically gifted Rafael Leao.

Kristensen not only completed the joint-highest number of tackles for Denmark — four — but also demonstrated composure in possession, maintaining an impressive 92% pass completion rate.

Former Denmark defender Morten Bruun was full of praise.

“If he keeps playing like this, the right-back spot is his,” Bruun told TV2, awarding Kristensen an 8/10 rating. “He was up against a difficult opponent in Leao, but the Dane won that battle. You could tell by the fact that Leao was substituted.”

Leao, hailed as “one of the best players in the world” by Portugal manager Roberto Martinez and valued at £125 million by Milan president Paolo Scaroni in 2024, was subdued by Kristensen, who handled him so effectively that the winger was withdrawn in the 76th minute at Parken Stadium.

Campo also gave Kristensen an 8/10, describing his performance as “disciplined and physical.” While acknowledging that Leao’s quick footwork caused occasional problems, they noted that Kristensen largely came out on top in their duel.

“It was entertaining to watch [Kristensen] and Leao go head-to-head on the right side,” Bold commented, suggesting that while neither landed a knockout punch, the Leeds loanee won the contest on points. “Leao is a tricky opponent, but the Danish full-back handled him well in most situations.”

Kristensen Holds His Own Against PSG’s Nuno Mendes

Kristensen didn’t just impress against Leao. He also stood firm against Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes, widely regarded as one of the best left-backs in the world. Even when Mendes surged forward with his trademark lung-busting runs, Kristensen managed to hold his ground effectively.

Frankfurt Keen on Permanent Deal for Kristensen

Despite his strong performances, Kristensen is still expected to leave Leeds permanently this summer, with Eintracht Frankfurt keen to secure a permanent move for the full-back. Signed from Red Bull Salzburg for £10 million, Kristensen has convinced Frankfurt’s sporting director Timmo Hardung that he is worth keeping long-term.

“We’re trying,” Hardung said when asked about Frankfurt’s interest in retaining Kristensen. “He’s here until June 30th, and we know his quality.

“It’s no secret that he’s become an important figure off the pitch as well. He’s a great fit within our team and the club. We still have time, so let’s work on it. We’ll have his qualities at least until June 30th.”
