Steve Clarke’s side controlled much of the first half but found themselves under sustained pressure after the break, with Rangers’ John Souttar and his defensive partner Grant Hanley stepping up to preserve Scotland’s clean sheet.

Scotland will retain their place in Nations League A if they can avoid defeat against Greece in the return leg at Hampden Park on Sunday.

Nevin Praises Souttar and Hanley After Greece Victory

Despite making only 17 Scottish Premiership appearances for Rangers this season due to injury, Souttar delivered a commanding performance for Scotland on Thursday night.

Pat Nevin was particularly impressed by the partnership between Hanley and Souttar, highlighting their dominance in the air. Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live [20 March, 9:41 pm], Nevin said:

“Hanley and Souttar were brilliant tonight. They gave absolutely nothing away, won nearly every header, and remained composed throughout.”

Scotland Likely to Rely on Souttar Again at Hampden

Scotland emerged victorious against Greece despite enduring long spells of pressure, especially after the introduction of talented 17-year-old Konstantinos Karetsas at halftime. But given Greece’s impressive showing on Thursday, Clarke’s men will likely need Souttar to be at his best again to secure another clean sheet and seal Scotland’s place in Nations League A.

Since joining Rangers from Hearts in the summer of 2022, Souttar has been a defensive stalwart at Ibrox. Now, Scotland will be counting on the 28-year-old to replicate that form on Sunday. His commanding display in Athens came as no surprise to the Rangers faithful, who have grown accustomed to such reliable performances from their defensive rock.
