Josh Sargent has become one of the most in-demand players in the Championship since joining Norwich City in 2022.
After a difficult start in the Premier League following his €9.5 million move from Werder Bremen in 2021, the USMNT striker found his form after Norwich’s relegation, with his first prolific spell coming between August and October 2022 under Dean Smith.
Since then, the 25-year-old has been a standout performer in the Championship despite a period of managerial upheaval at Carrow Road. Sargent is now playing under his fourth permanent manager, Johannes Hoff Thorup.
Even though injuries hampered his campaign last season, during which Norwich reached the play-offs under David Wagner, Sargent still attracted interest from Premier League side AFC Bournemouth and MLS clubs St Louis City and FC Cincinnati.
This season, despite missing 13 games due to a groin injury, Sargent has once again been linked with a move away. Nottingham Forest, the surprise package of the Premier League under Nuno Espírito Santo, are reportedly interested as they push for a European spot, sitting third with nine games remaining.
Norwich have reportedly set a price tag of €15-20 million for Sargent, and FLW has examined the financial implications for Forest if they decide to move for the American forward.
Josh Sargent’s Estimated Salary at Norwich City Amid Nottingham Forest Interest
Sargent has been in fine form this season, scoring 12 goals and providing five assists, making him the joint-fourth highest scorer in the league and Norwich’s second-leading scorer behind Borja Sainz, who has 17 goals.
The 27-time international signed his latest contract in October 2023, which runs until 2028, with reports from Florian Plettenberg confirming that no release clause was included. According to Capology estimates, Sargent currently earns £25,000 per week, amounting to £1.3 million annually.
With around £5.2 million remaining on his contract, Sargent is tied as the third-highest earner at Norwich, alongside Kenny McLean, Emiliano Marcondes, Angus Gunn, and Aston Villa loanee Lewis Dobbin.
How Sargent’s Salary Would Fit into Nottingham Forest’s Wage Structure
Although Forest are on course for their first European finish since 1996, Capology reports that they have the fifth-lowest payroll in the Premier League, with a weekly wage bill of £1,058,000 and an annual total of £55,016,000—only Bournemouth, Southampton, Brentford, and Ipswich Town spend less.
If Forest were to match Sargent’s current weekly salary, he would become the joint-fourth lowest earner at the City Ground, on par with Jota Silva and five-goal winger Anthony Elanga.
Sargent would also be competing for a starting role against a revitalized Chris Wood, who has been key to Forest’s resurgence under Nuno. The experienced New Zealander has scored 18 goals in 29 appearances and was recently rewarded with a contract extension until 2027.
Forest aren’t the only club keeping tabs on Sargent, with Championship leaders Leeds United also expressing interest. With Norwich’s play-off hopes fading, it seems increasingly likely that they will lose their star striker this summer.
