John Souttar Poised for New Role at Rangers Amid Contract Talks
John Souttar has been a key figure for Rangers this season, and his future at Ibrox could come with added responsibilities if he agrees to a new contract. Despite battling injuries, the centre-back has been among the club’s standout performers.
With his current deal set to enter its final year next summer, Rangers may have to consider selling him to avoid losing him on a free transfer. However, should he extend his stay, a leadership role could be in the pipeline.
Souttar in Line to Become Rangers Captain
Scottish journalist Mark Guidi has suggested that Souttar is a prime candidate to take over the captaincy from James Tavernier once he signs a new contract. Guidi believes the 28-year-old defender or Nico Raskin could be next in line for the armband.
Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show (March 20), Guidi stated: “For me, if [Souttar] stays, signs a new contract, he’s the next captain. Souttar or Raskin are the next captain of [Rangers].”
Ferguson Counting on Souttar at Ibrox
Barry Ferguson has strengthened his case to remain at Rangers beyond his interim role after securing big wins against José Mourinho and Brendan Rodgers in recent weeks. Victories over Fenerbahce and Celtic have sparked calls for him to be appointed permanently.
While overcoming Athletic Club in the Europa League quarter-finals remains a tough challenge, fans are optimistic. Ferguson will need his key players available, including Souttar, who is currently on international duty with Scotland. The defender impressed in the Tartan Army’s Nations League win over Greece on March 20.
Despite his injury struggles this season, Souttar remains a crucial player for the Light Blues. Meanwhile, Tavernier, who has been a dependable captain for years, appears to be nearing the end of his time at Ibrox.
If Rangers opt for a leadership transition, Souttar or Raskin would be strong contenders for the role. However, before any decision is made, the club must first appoint a permanent manager.
