Barry Ferguson has made a strong case to remain as Rangers manager beyond this season, but that hasn’t stopped numerous names from being linked to the role.
Ferguson was unexpectedly appointed on February 24 following Philippe Clement’s dismissal at Ibrox. The former Rangers midfielder, who previously served as a club ambassador, is now among the bookmakers’ favorites for the permanent position.
Several high-profile names, including Russell Martin, Rafael Benitez, and Jose Mourinho, have been mentioned as potential candidates, with former manager Steven Gerrard also linked to a return.
If Ferguson doesn’t secure the job, there are suggestions he could stay on as an assistant, potentially forming a partnership with Gerrard or another incoming manager. However, his older brother, Derek Ferguson, speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, doubts he would accept such a role.
“That wouldn’t sit well with Barry,” Derek said. “He wants to be in charge; he wants to be the main man. I don’t see him taking on an assistant position. If he doesn’t get the job, he’d likely return to his ambassador role—unless someone came in that truly excited him. But I get the impression it’s Rangers or nothing for him.
“This opportunity came out of nowhere, and he’s loving every moment. Will he take another job? Probably not. And I don’t think he’d be interested in being an assistant either. He thrives under pressure and enjoys the spotlight.”
After orchestrating a two-legged victory over Mourinho’s Fenerbahce and securing Rangers’ first away Old Firm win in five years, Ferguson has shown he is as capable as any contender.
In terms of understanding the club, few rank higher than Ferguson. If he continues delivering key victories, Rangers may not even consider looking elsewhere.
However, results will ultimately determine his fate. A couple of setbacks—such as a Europa League exit to Athletic Bilbao—could quickly shift fan sentiment toward a bigger name.
For now, Ferguson must focus on each game as it comes and hope his performances earn him the permanent position this summer.
