Billy Slater has backed Broncos star Reece Walsh despite increasing criticism over his high error rate.

Walsh delivered some big moments in Brisbane’s round three win over the Cowboys but also committed five handling errors. This came after a difficult performance in the previous week’s unexpected loss to the Raiders.

Although Broncos coach Michael Maguire publicly defended Walsh, concerns have been raised that his high-intensity style might be becoming a liability for the team. However, Slater—who has coached Walsh at State of Origin level—believes the positives still outweigh the negatives as the young fullback continues to develop.

“It’s a bit of everything—he’ll naturally grow, develop, and mature into a more consistent player as time goes on,” Slater said. “I actually think he’s playing well. He’s making some strong defensive contributions and is committed in that area. He had some good moments with the ball, and while there are errors, I know how hard he works and critiques his game, so he’ll address those.

“When you create so many opportunities, there’s a tendency to expect success every time, and that can impact your mindset. But he’ll improve and become more consistent over time.”

Brad Fittler highlighted the importance of Walsh’s teammates in supporting his performance.

“It’s also about the players around him,” Fittler said. “A lot of his errors happen when someone moves into his space. He’s always operating at such high speed whenever he touches the ball.”

At just 22, Walsh has already established himself as one of rugby league’s brightest stars following his breakout season with the Broncos two years ago. He has also shone for the Maroons, but with Kalyn Ponga available for this year’s series, Walsh faces growing pressure to retain the No.1 jersey.

Brisbane’s next challenge is a round four clash against the Dolphins.
