Raskin Shines on International Stage with Full Belgium Debut
Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin earned his first senior start for Belgium in a commanding 3-0 victory over Ukraine on Sunday, March 23.
After making his debut as a late substitute in Belgium’s 3-1 loss to Ukraine in the UEFA Nations League quarter-final first leg, Raskin was handed a starting role by manager Rudi Garcia for the decisive second leg.
With Youri Tielemans suspended, the 24-year-old partnered Kevin De Bruyne in midfield and played a crucial role in Belgium’s remarkable comeback, overturning the deficit to secure a 4-3 aggregate win and maintain their Group A status in the Nations League.
Raskin Impresses for Club and Country
Raskin has been a key figure in Rangers’ midfield this season, making 39 appearances, scoring twice, and providing six assists. His performances at Ibrox earned him a long-awaited call-up to Belgium’s senior squad for the March international break.
Although he had previously impressed at youth level, his senior debut had been a long time coming. After earning his first cap with a 10-minute cameo in the first leg, Raskin seized his opportunity with a full debut in the return fixture.
His performance drew widespread praise from Belgian media. Sporza highlighted his effective partnership with Hans Vanaken in midfield, while Nieuwsblad noted how former Belgium manager Domenico Tedesco had underestimated him, describing Raskin as “alert, constantly coaching, and an ever-reliable presence in midfield.”
Key Player for Rangers in Europa League
Raskin has been an integral part of Rangers’ UEFA Europa League campaign, playing in all 10 matches so far, with eight starts and two goal contributions.
As Barry Ferguson’s side prepares to face Athletic Bilbao in the quarter-finals, Raskin’s ability to step up in crucial moments could prove decisive. The former Standard Liège midfielder has a history of delivering in big games—his standout performance in Rangers’ 3-2 Old Firm win over Celtic being a prime example.
Similarly, for Belgium, he played a vital role in their comeback against Ukraine, demonstrating his composure and influence in high-stakes matches. Given his current form, Raskin should be a key figure in Rangers’ Europa League campaign as they push for a spot in the semi-finals.
