Belgian coach Philippe Clement, who was dismissed by Rangers last month, is reportedly being considered for a managerial role at Anderlecht next season.
Clement’s 16-month tenure at Ibrox ended following a 3-1 home defeat to St Mirren, just weeks after narrowly avoiding the sack when Rangers were eliminated from the Scottish Cup by Championship side Queen’s Park at Ajax.
Since his departure, former club captain Barry Ferguson has stepped in as interim manager, making an immediate impact. Ferguson led Rangers to a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce in the Europa League last 16 before securing a thrilling Old Firm derby win against Celtic at Parkhead.
With the San Francisco 49ers set to take over at Rangers, the club may look for a high-profile appointment after Ferguson finishes the season, despite his strong start.
According to Belgian outlet RTBF (via footnews), Clement could return to management in his homeland this summer.
Anderlecht currently lacks a long-term head coach, with former boss Besnik Hasi recently appointed as interim manager until the end of the season following David Hubert’s dismissal. Hasi, who led Anderlecht to a league title in 2014, now takes charge of a side sitting fourth in the table, 17 points behind leaders Genk.
Reports suggest that unless Hasi wins the Belgian Cup and significantly closes the gap to the top, he is unlikely to secure the job permanently. Clement is reportedly among the candidates to replace him.
As both a player and manager, Clement has enjoyed considerable success in Belgium. He won the league title with Genk in 2019 before achieving back-to-back triumphs with Club Brugge in the following seasons. His success earned him a move to Monaco in January 2022, but his tenure there was less fruitful before he joined Rangers 18 months later.
