Staggs’ Return to Boost Broncos Ahead of Dolphins Clash

Kotoni Staggs’ return from injury is set to inject power and passion into the Brisbane Broncos ahead of their derby showdown with the Dolphins. Staggs, who missed the first three rounds due to a hip flexor injury, played a key role in establishing the fierce ‘Battle of Brisbane’ rivalry in 2023. His match-winning try in that inaugural clash was followed by an emotional cry of “this is our home,” after the Dolphins had laid claim to co-tenancy at Suncorp Stadium.

Staggs is expected to have a full week of training at right centre and is likely to replace Deine Mariner for Friday night’s match. Gehamat Shibasaki, who delivered one of his best performances in Brisbane’s 26-16 win over North Queensland, will retain his spot at left centre.

Broncos Take Underdog Mentality into Derby

Despite a 2-1 record after three rounds, the Broncos are adopting an underdog mindset for this clash, mindful of the Dolphins’ 40-6 demolition of them in Round 26 last year. Meanwhile, the Dolphins are still searching for their first win of the season after a disappointing 0-3 start.

Prop Payne Haas, who was named man of the match in the victory over the Cowboys and claimed the Carl Webb Medal, is thrilled to have Staggs back for a game where he usually thrives.

“It’s probably one of the best games I’ve been a part of, to be honest,” Haas said.

“I remember in 2023 when Kotoni scored the winning try and the stadium was rumbling. It’s honestly an honour to be part of it, and I can’t wait to be there.”

Haas, who was dominant against the Cowboys, is determined to move past last year’s heavy defeat.

“That was last year,” Haas said, downplaying the loss while sending a warning to the Dolphins.

Haas Ready to Hit Top Gear

After undergoing offseason ankle surgery, Haas admitted his disrupted pre-season impacted his fitness, but he’s now finding his rhythm.

“I had surgery at the start of the year, and that knocked me back a bit with my fitness,” he said.

“I’m building myself up again.”

Ben Hunt Eager for First Dolphins Derby

Broncos five-eighth Ben Hunt is preparing for his first Dolphins derby since returning to Brisbane, the club he last played for in 2017. While the Dolphins had expressed interest in signing him, the 34-year-old was always set on returning to his former club.

“It wasn’t overly serious. They showed a little bit of interest, but in the end, I just wanted to come back here,” Hunt said.

“It was about my love for the Broncos. With everything they gave me early in my career, it was hard not to come back.”

Hunt is anticipating another intense ‘Battle of Brisbane.’

“It’s going to be another massive game. They’ll come ready to play, and it will be a tough battle. I’m looking forward to it.”
