Rangers are still no closer to identifying their next permanent manager, but one candidate may have climbed higher on their shortlist.
Philippe Clement was dismissed in February after a disappointing domestic campaign, with Rangers opting to wait until the end of the season to appoint a long-term successor.
Barry Ferguson stepped in as interim manager and has shown encouraging signs, including a dramatic 4-3 comeback win against Dundee, an Old Firm victory, and progress in the Europa League.
However, Rangers may be inclined to pursue a high-profile appointment, and one of their reported targets is now available.
Rangers target Marco Rose now a free agent
Rangers have been linked with German manager Marco Rose, who is highly regarded in his homeland, and they may have received a boost in their pursuit.
Fabrizio Romano reported on Sunday (March 30) that Rose has been sacked as RB Leipzig head coach following a string of poor results.
Although his tenure at Leipzig ended prematurely, Rose remains a manager who could elevate Rangers to the next level, and his availability increases the likelihood of securing his services.
Rose could elevate Rangers
While previous links between Rangers and Rose may have seemed unrealistic—given the unlikelihood of him leaving the Bundesliga for the Scottish Premiership—his departure from Leipzig makes a move to Ibrox more plausible.
If offered the position, Rose might now be more open to taking charge at Rangers, which would be a significant coup for the club.
Rose previously led Borussia Monchengladbach to the Champions League knockout stages and guided Borussia Dortmund to a second-place Bundesliga finish. He also claimed silverware by winning the DFB-Pokal with Leipzig in 2023, making him a strong candidate who should not be overlooked.
