Two Sunderland players have drawn the ire of fans after seemingly ‘liking’ Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup celebration post on social media.

Newcastle marked their Carabao Cup triumph with a trophy parade and presentation in the city on Saturday, attended by around 300,000 fans. An open-top bus parade took players and staff from St James’ Park to the Town Moor, where a Q&A session with Eddie Howe and his squad followed the trophy presentation.

Earlier this month, Newcastle ended a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy by beating Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley. The celebrations went viral on social media and were also broadcast by Sky News and BBC.

Prominent football Instagram account 433 posted several photos from the parade, captioned: “70 years without a trophy. Until now. This is… 𝒘𝙝𝒂𝙩 𝙞𝒕 𝒎𝙚𝒂𝙣𝒔 🖤🤍.” The post quickly gained traction, garnering around 400,000 likes. However, two of those likes have sparked controversy among Sunderland fans.

Sunderland duo Jenson Seelt and Salis Abdul Samed both appeared to like the post, despite Newcastle’s celebrations coinciding with Sunderland’s 1-0 Championship victory over Millwall. Neither player was involved in the game due to injury struggles this season. Seelt, a defender, is yet to start a league match, while defensive midfielder Abdul Samed has made just two starts.

Their social media activity did not go unnoticed, with Sunderland fans sharing screenshots of the likes and expressing their displeasure. One response summed up the general feeling: “Hope neither of them play for us again.”
