Rangers Await Takeover as Ferguson Prepares for Uncertain Future
Rangers remain in a period of uncertainty as they await the completion of the club’s takeover by 49ers Enterprises. While Barry Ferguson has done a commendable job as interim manager, guiding the team to the Europa League quarter-finals, speculation persists that the incoming owners may seek to appoint their own long-term choice for the managerial role.
Ferguson’s Readiness for the Future
Despite suggestions that Ferguson’s strong start could earn him the role permanently, it may still be premature to draw such conclusions given his limited experience in top-level management. If the takeover by the 49ers and Andrew Cavenagh is finalized, Rangers are expected to receive significant financial backing, potentially reshaping the club’s future.
However, amid the uncertainty, journalist Keith Jackson has claimed that Ferguson is already planning ahead in case he remains in charge. Writing in the Daily Record (31 March), Jackson stated:
“Given how meticulous Ferguson is in his approach, it stands to reason that he already has a clear vision of the changes needed to make Rangers competitive next season. It’s likely he has even drawn up a list of potential transfer targets should he be given the opportunity to continue as manager under Cavenagh’s ownership.”
Would Rangers Be Taking a Gamble on Ferguson?
If the 49ers were to appoint Ferguson on a full-time basis, it would represent a significant gamble due to his limited managerial experience at this level. While results have been positive under his leadership, Rangers’ recent narrow victory over Dundee—secured by a 93rd-minute winner—highlights that there is still work to be done.
Nonetheless, Ferguson has already voiced his opinions on the club’s potential summer transfer plans. If the new owners recognize his preparedness and alignment with their vision, his proactive approach could bolster his chances of securing the permanent job.
For now, Ferguson’s focus must remain on stabilizing the team and securing more convincing victories to demonstrate the progress being made. The final decision will likely rest with the 49ers upon their arrival in Glasgow, making this a crucial period for Ferguson to prove he is the right man for the job.
