Police Conclude Investigation into Parkhead Incident

Vaclav Cerny will not face any police action over the Watergate controversy after authorities concluded their investigation, determining that no criminal offense had occurred.

The Rangers winger—who may still be subject to disciplinary action from the SFA—sparked controversy when he sprayed water on Celtic fans while celebrating Hamza Igamane’s dramatic late goal in the Old Firm clash. The incident provoked anger among the home supporters, prompting Celtic to raise concerns with the authorities.

Police and security personnel had to intervene as tensions escalated, and Police Scotland later confirmed they were looking into the matter. However, on Monday afternoon, a spokesperson told Record Sport that while guidance had been provided to the club, no further action would be taken against the Czech international.

A Police Scotland representative stated: “We received information, conducted inquiries, and found no evidence of criminality. Officers have engaged with the club and provided advice.”

Cerny dismissed the investigation as “absurd,” while Rangers’ interim boss Barry Ferguson defended his player, insisting he would be more concerned if his squad didn’t celebrate goals.

Meanwhile, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers criticized the 27-year-old for his actions, calling them disrespectful to the home supporters. On Friday, Rodgers remarked: “Running along the touchline and squirting water at fans shows a lack of respect. I wouldn’t want my players doing that. There’s always a line that shouldn’t be crossed.”

Although the police have closed the case, Cerny may still face repercussions from the SFA. Former referee Steve Conroy believes disciplinary action is likely, suggesting the governing body could issue a formal notice of disapproval.

Speaking on the Ref’s View podcast, Conroy stated: “The SFA must take some action. Whether it’s a one-game ban or a formal reprimand, something has to be done. It was childish and unnecessary.”
