Barry Ferguson may be performing well as Rangers’ interim manager, but with US investment looming, his long-term future at the club remains uncertain.
Rangers are on the brink of a takeover led by 49ers Enterprises and healthcare tycoon Andrew Cavenagh, with several key decisions to be made before a permanent managerial appointment is considered.
One such decision is the appointment of a new sporting director, a move confirmed earlier this season by CEO Patrick Stewart. Only after this role is filled will the club determine its next manager.
Andy Halliday believes Ferguson faces an uphill battle to convince the prospective new owners that he is the right man for the job at Ibrox.
However, 49ers executive Paraag Marathe risks alienating fans early on if the Americans choose a high-profile candidate currently being linked to the role.
Red Bull connection sparks Marco Rose speculation
Given 49ers Enterprises’ ties to Red Bull, including the partial sale of their Leeds United stake to the energy drink giant, Red Bull’s potential involvement at Rangers is not out of the question.
This connection has led to speculation around former Borussia Dortmund manager Marco Rose, who recently parted ways with RB Leipzig after two and a half years in charge. Rose, a respected German coach, previously managed RB Salzburg in Austria and Dortmund in Germany, where he was at the helm during their 2022 Europa League loss to Rangers.
Yet, before any potential move materializes, the 49ers might want to reconsider, given Rose’s history at Celtic Park.
Marco Rose as Rangers manager would be a controversial choice
While Rose boasts European experience, doubts persist over whether he truly understands what it takes to succeed at Rangers. His track record doesn’t stand out as exceptional, and when compared to former manager Philippe Clement, he appears to be a less compelling candidate.
Beyond concerns about his credentials, Rangers supporters may take issue with Rose’s previous connection to Celtic. Back in 2018, while managing RB Salzburg, he was seen at Celtic Park wearing a Celtic scarf and hat after his team defeated the Hoops 2-1 in the Europa League. Salzburg had also beaten Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic 3-1 earlier in the group stage.
For a club where fan sentiment plays a crucial role, Rose’s past Celtic affiliations could make his potential appointment a tough sell for the 49ers.
