Van Bronckhorst Poised for New Role in Football

Former Rangers player and manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst is reportedly being considered for a fresh opportunity in football.

Van Bronckhorst has strong ties to Rangers, having played at Ibrox between 1998 and 2001 after joining under Dick Advocaat. He later returned as manager in 2021, stepping in after Steven Gerrard’s departure to Aston Villa. During his tenure, he guided Rangers to Scottish Cup success and an impressive Europa League final run in May 2022, but he was dismissed later that year.

Following a break from management, Van Bronckhorst took charge at Turkish club Besiktas, though he was relieved of his duties in November last year due to poor results.

Feyenoord Eyeing Van Bronckhorst for Technical Director Role

The 50-year-old now appears close to an emotional return to Feyenoord, the club where he both started and ended his playing career.

According to freelance journalist Mark Walker, via The Rangers Review, Van Bronckhorst is being lined up for the technical director position at Feyenoord, with current director Dennis te Kloese expected to depart.

Feyenoord currently sit fourth in the Eredivisie, a position that would secure them a spot in the Europa League second qualifying round. Club legend Jan Boskamp has welcomed the potential appointment, stating:

“If they call Gio, they’re calling a big man. He’s a Feyenoord man. If you look at those big teams in Europe, you see that those old players are often involved. It would be a perfect job for him.”

Van Bronckhorst’s Feyenoord Legacy

Van Bronckhorst retired as a Feyenoord player in 2010, having made 249 appearances, scoring 37 goals, and providing 28 assists. He returned to the club as manager in 2015 and enjoyed a successful four-year spell, highlighted by winning the Eredivisie title in 2017.

Under his leadership, Feyenoord also claimed two KNVB Cups and two Johan Cruyff Shields. He left the role in 2019 with an impressive 60.8% win rate, stepping away on his own terms.

After a brief and unsuccessful stint in China, Van Bronckhorst later took charge at Rangers in November 2021. Now, he could be set for another chapter in his career with Feyenoord.
