Ian Harte Faces Fresh Backlash from Sunderland Fans Over Tommy Watson Tweet

Former Sunderland and Leeds United player Ian Harte has once again found himself at the center of a social media storm following his latest comments.

Harte stirred controversy among Sunderland supporters after congratulating Tommy Watson on his move to Brighton & Hove Albion. Watson, an 18-year-old winger, is set to join the Premier League club when the transfer window opens on July 1st, concluding a protracted transfer saga. Sunderland secured a structured deal worth over £10 million, including a 20% sell-on clause. Despite having 18 months left on his contract, an extension was unlikely, prompting the Black Cats to cash in.

Although Harte does not represent Watson—who is managed by former Sunderland striker Danny Graham—he has family ties to the young winger. Following the transfer announcement, Harte posted on social media: “Congratulations Tommy fantastic move! Will miss seeing both of you at ours x.” His comment quickly drew criticism from Sunderland fans, many of whom are still frustrated with his past involvement in Jack Clarke’s transfer to Ipswich Town.

Harte’s Rocky History with Sunderland Fans

Harte has had a tense relationship with Sunderland supporters, particularly due to his role in Clarke’s departure last summer. The former Republic of Ireland international, who represents Clarke, faced backlash for remarks made on the Tippy Tappy Podcast with Sam Allardyce, where he expressed hope that Clarke would secure a transfer. Many fans viewed this as an attempt to orchestrate the winger’s exit.

Although Harte later clarified that his words were misinterpreted and that Clarke enjoyed his time at Sunderland, the damage had already been done. Clarke eventually moved on, and Harte was widely blamed by supporters.

Adding to the tension, Harte previously sparked outrage with a social media post celebrating Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup victory. Given his past connections with Sunderland, fans perceived the tweet as a deliberate provocation. In response to criticism, Harte defended himself, stating his admiration for Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, whom he had played under at Bournemouth. However, fans remained unconvinced, accusing him of being insensitive to Sunderland’s fierce rivalry with Newcastle.

With his latest tweet regarding Watson’s transfer, Harte has once again found himself at odds with Sunderland fans, further straining an already contentious relationship.
