Critchley Offers Assurance to Hearts Duo Ahead of Crucial Fixtures

As Hearts enter a pivotal stage in their season, head coach Neil Critchley has reassured midfielders Yan Dhanda and Alan Forrest that they remain in his plans despite recent absences from the starting lineup.

With crucial Scottish Premiership matches against Dundee United and Motherwell before the league split, Hearts are battling for a top-six spot—an objective their opponents share. They also have a Scottish Cup semi-final clash against Aberdeen at Hampden Park on the horizon.

Despite having more players returning from injury, Critchley intends to keep Dhanda and Forrest involved. Both have been limited to substitute appearances in 2025, with only one start each. However, Forrest recently made an impact, scoring four goals in a 4-1 closed-door win over St Johnstone during the international break, while Dhanda’s strong work ethic in that match also impressed Critchley.

“Yan needs to stay patient,” Critchley told the Edinburgh News. “He worked incredibly hard in that closed-door game, growing into it and gaining confidence as it went on. He put in a huge physical effort, even cramping up near the end. That’s the kind of attitude we want from all players in those situations.”

Forrest’s Finishing Ability a Key Asset

Critchley believes Forrest’s composure and goal-scoring instincts can be valuable in the coming games. “Alan is very steady in his temperament—he never gets too high or too low,” said Critchley. “He’s a fantastic professional, giving his all every day, which is why we trust him.

“In training, he scores goals regularly with both feet. In the closed-door match, he got himself into great positions and finished well. I see it every day—when he gets a chance near goal, I expect him to score.”

Both Dhanda and Forrest are under contract for next season. Dhanda signed a three-year deal after joining from Ross County last summer, while Forrest’s contract runs until 2026. Their involvement in the remainder of the campaign—and whether they stay beyond the summer—remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, Hearts are set to welcome back several senior players from injury, adding to competition for places. Defender Craig Halkett returned to the squad for the recent loss to Celtic but remained an unused substitute.
