The Carolina Panthers fell short of expectations during the 2024 season, finishing with a disappointing 5-12 record and landing third in the NFC South.

Quarterback Bryce Young was briefly benched in favor of veteran Andy Dalton, though the team eventually reinstated the former No. 1 pick. All indications suggest that Young will remain the team’s starter moving forward. With that in mind, the Panthers must now focus on strengthening the roster around him to set him up for success.

NFL draft expert Chad Reuter recently shared what he sees as the ideal first two draft picks for every team. For the Panthers, he highlighted Penn State teammates Tyler Warren (tight end) and Kevin Winston Jr. (defensive back) as prime selections.

Reuter acknowledged that while tight end may not be Carolina’s most urgent need, Warren could offer immediate offensive impact as a reliable target and red-zone weapon for Young. His addition could play a key role in the quarterback’s development in Year 3. On the defensive side, Winston—known for his range and tackling ability—could be a great fit alongside newly acquired safety Tre’von Moehrig.

Interestingly, Reuter noted that this approach would follow a trend set by teams like the Rams and Jaguars, who selected college teammates in last year’s draft. For example, the Rams took Jared Verse and Braden Fiske from Florida State, while the Jaguars nabbed Brian Thomas Jr. and Maason Smith from LSU.

Warren had a standout 2024 season, hauling in 104 catches for 1,233 yards and eight touchdowns, leading the Big Ten in receptions and placing seventh in Heisman Trophy voting. He also showcased his versatility by rushing for 218 yards and four scores and proved to be an effective blocker. His skill set allows him to contribute as either a traditional tight end or a slot option.

Winston, who also played at Penn State, missed most of the 2024 season due to injury, appearing in only three games. Still, he impressed during that limited action and had a strong 2023 campaign, tallying 61 tackles, three tackles for loss, one pick, and five pass breakups. Known for his tackling consistency and physicality, Winston could immediately compete for a starting role.

With Warren potentially overtaking Tommy Tremble as the team’s top tight end and Winston starting next to Moehrig, both rookies could become key contributors for the Panthers from day one.
