Celtic midfielder Arne Engels has expressed his desire to see both himself and Rangers counterpart Nico Raskin feature in Belgium’s national team, despite the intense competition for places.
Engels insists there’s no personal rivalry between the pair, highlighting that their playing styles are quite different. While Raskin received a recent call-up, Engels already boasts four senior caps and believes both can find a spot in Rudi Garcia’s plans.
He said: “I don’t see it as a rivalry because Nico plays a different role than I do. I just concentrate on my own performances and helping Celtic win trophies. That’s what matters most. We don’t speak much, but we have a mutual respect.
“When we cross paths during games, there’s always respect because we’re both Belgian—that’s natural. I’ve got nothing against him.
“We were together at the Under-21 Euros for Belgium, and we always have a friendly chat when we meet. It would be fantastic for both of us to be part of the national squad.”
Engels’ versatility could boost his chances, especially with Brendan Rodgers using him in various midfield roles. Though he’s often been a more attacking threat—scoring 10 goals so far this season—he’s also stepped into a deeper role in Callum McGregor’s absence.
He added: “I’ll play wherever the manager needs me—there’s not much choice in that!
“I give my all no matter the position. Right now, I’m enjoying my role and feel like I’m contributing both defensively and offensively. Of course, there’s still room for improvement, just like any player.
“But ultimately, I’ll go wherever the team needs me.”
