Hibernian became the latest team to leave Ibrox with all three points, sealing a 2-0 victory over Rangers on Saturday.
Barry Ferguson was left seething as goals from Dylan Levitt and Martin Boyle condemned his side to yet another defeat. While some may have been shocked by the result, it marks Rangers’ fifth consecutive home loss — a worrying trend that’s quickly becoming the norm.
Controversial moment involving Cyriel Dessers overlooked
Amid the fallout, an incident involving Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers has flown somewhat under the radar. The Nigerian striker appeared to be blatantly blocked off the ball by Hibs defender Rocky Boshiri as he made a run toward the box. Had he made it through, Dessers would have had a clear shot at goal with the score still at 1-0.
Former Premier League referee and ex-PGMOL chief Keith Hackett criticized the decision, telling Ibrox News that referee Don Robertson missed a clear foul.
“There’s no question that Boshiri used his arm illegally to impede his opponent. That should have been a free-kick and a yellow card,” Hackett explained. “Unfortunately, VAR couldn’t step in under current protocols.”
Referee under scrutiny as Rangers’ Ibrox slump worsens
Robertson was also at the centre of another puzzling call during the match, capping off a frustrating afternoon for Rangers.
The loss adds Hibs to a growing list of recent Ibrox conquerors — including Queen’s Park, St Mirren, Motherwell, and Fenerbahce — deepening Rangers’ woes at home. It’s a miserable run that could seriously impact Barry Ferguson’s chances of being offered the role permanently.
Despite their domestic struggles, Rangers’ season now hinges on their Europa League campaign. With a crucial first leg against Athletic Bilbao looming, Ferguson’s side must bounce back — and quickly.
While some blame may lie with the officials, the overall performance left much to be desired. If this home form continues, Rangers’ European ambitions could soon be over.
