Leicester City is facing the prospect of relegation and the possibility of yet another managerial change. Ruud van Nistelrooy’s time with the club has been disastrous, with Leicester securing only one win in 2025 and sitting 19th in the Premier League, making relegation all but certain.

With Leicester set to face high-flying Newcastle United on Monday, another defeat could spell the end of Van Nistelrooy’s hopes of keeping the club in the top flight, with the season unfolding disastrously.

As the club prepares for a likely return to the Championship, they are now exploring the possibility of hiring a manager who fits the vision the board and fans want for the future.

Russell Martin, former Southampton manager, is reportedly being considered as a potential replacement for Van Nistelrooy. Martin is known for his emphasis on a possession-based game, similar to the approach Enzo Maresca used at Leicester to secure promotion from the Championship.

While Martin’s tenure at Southampton ended poorly, with the team sitting just below Leicester in the Premier League standings, the 39-year-old still enjoys a solid reputation in management. Last season, he guided Southampton to a remarkable run in the Championship, securing promotion through the play-offs after a thrilling win over Leeds United at Wembley.

If Leicester are looking to start fresh next season, Martin’s familiarity with the Championship could be the right choice. Ready for a new challenge, he could be an ideal candidate to lead the club back to the Premier League.

For this to work, Leicester would need to back Martin fully. One of the main reasons for the club’s struggles in the Premier League has been inadequate spending, with recruitment in the past transfer windows falling short. If appointed, Martin would need the resources to build a squad capable of securing promotion. While what follows after a return to the top flight remains uncertain, Martin’s experience and tactical acumen could make him a strong appointment, provided the board is willing to invest in his vision.
