Rangers face an uphill battle in keeping Scotland’s top young talents at Ibrox amid the growing pull of the Premier League.

The financial power generated by TV deals has transformed English football, with elite academy setups now commonplace south of the border—making it increasingly difficult for Rangers to compete. While the Glasgow giants can offer a faster route to first-team football, that promise hasn’t always materialised consistently through their academy system.

The departure of Billy Gilmour to Chelsea in 2017 marked a turning point, as Scottish clubs have since struggled to hold onto their most gifted prospects. Now, another former Rangers youngster is being tipped for big things in England.

Rory Wilson signs new long-term deal with Aston Villa

Aston Villa have confirmed that 19-year-old striker Rory Wilson has signed a new contract with the club. The former Rangers academy starlet, who joined the Midlands side in 2022, is yet to make his senior debut but has made a big impression in Villa’s youth ranks.

Wilson’s new deal, which runs until 2027 with the option for a further year, comes off the back of a prolific campaign in the U18 Premier League—netting 16 goals in just 13 games.

The striker moved to Villa Park after scoring a remarkable 49 goals for Rangers’ youth teams. Despite the Scottish side’s efforts to keep him, Wilson opted for the move to England, a decision that now looks increasingly justified.

His performances had sparked interest from several Premier League clubs and even Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen, but this new contract ends speculation about a potential move.

Villa believe Wilson has Premier League potential

Rangers received a modest £300,000 in compensation for Wilson as a development fee, though his current trajectory suggests his value could soar well beyond that figure.

Aston Villa’s academy boss Mark Harrison expressed strong belief in the young forward’s future, stating that the club sees Wilson’s goal-scoring talent translating into senior success.

“We’re thrilled to have agreed a new contract with Rory,” Harrison told the club’s website. “He’s got a proven scoring record at academy level, and we’re confident he can carry that into the senior game.

“Rory’s dedication to his development has been evident throughout his time with us, and with his undeniable potential, we’re excited to help him take the next step toward the first team at Aston Villa.”
