Rangers have transformed into a formidable force in European competitions this season.

While their recent defeat to Hibernian highlighted domestic shortcomings—where Barry Ferguson did little to boost his credentials as permanent manager—the club continues to shine on the continental stage, a pattern that’s emerged in recent years. Despite struggling in the Scottish Premiership, Rangers have consistently raised their game in Europe.

Now in the Europa League quarter-finals, Rangers are preparing to face Athletic Club this week. Last weekend’s loss at Easter Road should be left behind as they shift focus to the Basque challenge ahead.

Rafael Alkorta: Rangers Tie Is a Potential Pitfall for Athletic

Former Athletic Club star Rafael Alkorta believes the tie against Rangers could be a tricky one for his old club. Having watched Rangers play three times this year, he’s noted their evolution into a more modern, technically capable side compared to the stereotypical physical Scottish teams of the past.

Speaking to *Estadio Deportivo*, Alkorta warned: “This tie could be a trap. Rangers aren’t like the Scottish teams from 20 years ago—they try to play good football.”

Although confident in Athletic’s abilities, he urged caution: “Athletic players won’t go there acting superior, even though they are probably the better side. I think they’ll be focused, but still, it’s the kind of matchup that can trip you up.”

He added that the return leg at San Mamés will be decisive: “It’s a good tie for Athletic. If they play like they have so far this season, they should be able to win it.”

Rangers’ Standout European Performances

This European campaign has seen Rangers deliver a series of impressive results, even if their domestic form has lagged. They’ve claimed big wins over Fenerbahce, Union Saint-Gilloise, Nice, and Malmo, and even secured a respectable draw against Tottenham Hotspur—performances that have reasserted their reputation on the continent.

Athletic Club should not expect an easy ride at Ibrox.

Though Ferguson has had difficulty lifting Rangers’ league form, this European journey could strengthen his case to remain at the helm beyond his interim tenure.
