The Eels’ rocky start to the 2025 NRL season has taken another unfortunate turn.

Zac Lomax has been ruled out for at least six weeks after suffering a foot injury—just as coach Jason Ryles had named him on the wing and star halfback Mitchell Moses was nearing a return. The decision to play Lomax out wide raised eyebrows, especially among Dragons fans, given his well-documented dissatisfaction with that position at his former club.

Lomax left St George Illawarra under tense circumstances, reportedly unhappy with his role and willing to take a pay cut to join Parramatta. After debuting in 2018, the 26-year-old played 114 games for the Dragons, and his golden point field-goal against them last weekend highlighted the emotional significance of the win.

Ironically, Lomax had recently said he was open to playing on the wing for the Eels—something he had resisted at the Dragons. But after being named in the No.5 jersey to face the Raiders, Lomax went down with a foot fracture late in the game. Despite the pain, he stayed on to nail the match-winning field-goal.

Scans later revealed a minor fracture, sidelining him for at least six weeks, though recovery could take up to 10 weeks, according to injury expert Brien Seeney. The timing is especially disappointing for Lomax, who was in contention for a wing spot in the NSW State of Origin squad after impressing last year.

New Blues coach Laurie Daley had recently commented on Lomax’s potential Origin role, noting: “I see Zac as a winger, not a centre at this level.” Daley hinted that competition for backline spots would be fierce, making Lomax’s injury a big setback.

**Mitchell Moses nearing return provides hope**

While Lomax’s injury is a blow, the Eels received positive news regarding Mitchell Moses. The experienced halfback is recovering well and could return as early as round seven, though round nine is the more likely target.

Eels CEO Jim Sarantinos confirmed on *SEN Radio*: “Mitch is definitely on track for round nine, but if things go well, round seven isn’t out of the question.”

His return is not only crucial for Parramatta’s season but also for the Blues, with Daley suggesting Moses is a strong contender for the five-eighth role in Origin 2025. “His game management and clutch play last year really impressed me,” Daley said.

Despite the setback with Lomax, the Eels will be hoping Moses’ comeback can reignite their campaign and steady the ship.
